Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2023, energy security has once again been pushed to the front of the policy debate in Europe. Energy resources play a critical role in economic growth and human wellbeing and will continue to be a key concern to policy makers. The ongoing geopolitical conflict, and a rapid global post-pandemic economic recovery, caused a surge in global energy prices.

Attempts by the European Union to ensure there will always be affordable energy for everyone have seen some success but the task is not at all simple or easy. The price of failure is too high for things to be left to just one set of policies.
