Event Information
Description
Secure Iowa Conference [October 3]
Secure Iowa is a conference that provides group and breakout sessions featuring professional speakers presenting on information security, IT risk management, compliance and privacy. This is a unique opportunity for security, privacy and audit professionals to gather for a time of learning and networking within Iowa’s borders. The conference will consist of Application & Infrastructure Security, Security Testing & Investigation, IT Risk Management & Audit, and Executive & Legal tracks to ensure a broad appeal across the various levels of attendees.
Pre-Conference Workshop [October 2]
Acquisition and Preservation of Data for Investigation
Description:
Examining the data to find out “what happened” in the case of suspected misconduct, criminal activity, or a system breach is more than looking at what is displayed on screen at the time of discovery. Often it requires imaging the hard drive or other non-volatile storage device, copying specific file system structures or acquiring volatile system memory to get a more complete picture. Learn about write-blockers, imaging techniques for non-volatile drives and RAID arrays and the acquisition and basic analysis of RAM. Materials and at-home examples will be provided.
Instructor:
Bryan Burkhardt
Director, Electronic Crime Institute at Des Moines Area Community College
Capture the Flag (CTF) [October 2 & 3]
Description:
This year at Secure Iowa we will have a Jeopardy-style CTF.
Jeopardy-style CTF games have the organizers running a set of challenges that each individual/team has to solve for points. In general, the more complicated the task the more points earned. Challenges are generally independent from each other and ideally idempotent between connecting players, which leads to reliability and stability for large contests. Scoring is nice and simple too: add up the points for solved challenges, and use timing of solutions to break ties.
Categories may include Web, Forensics, Crypto, Binary, and Lock Sport Challenges.
Don't be shy. There will be something there for people of "ALL" skillsets.
Equipment:
Bring your own computer (or share with a friend)
If you wish to participate in lock picking, you are welcome to bring your own picks, however, there should be extras to share. Additionally, a Software Defined Radio (SDR) for any Radio Frequency (RF) based puzzles is recommended.
Time:
October 2nd - 9:00am to 4:00pm
(You are encouraged to continue your progess at home. The challenge will be up all night. )
October 3rd - 9:00am to 3:00pm
