Event description

Description

On August 15th President Donald J. Trump in an unprecedented move revoked the security clearances held by former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency John O. Brennan and further threatened to revoke those of several other former and current senior US national security officials. In equally unprecedented action the next day 15 former senior national security leaders--from the Intelligence Community, CIA, NSA, and the FBI--signed a letter of protest claiming the President's decision had more to do with "stifing of free speech" than with who should have a security clearance. This has spawned a national debate on the appropriateness of both the President's action and the dissent expressed by the former officials.

Please join the Michael V. Hayden Center for Intelligence, Policy, and International Security at George Mason University's Schar School of Policy and Government as we launch a series of events that will examine Accountability of Intelligence. This evening's panel discussion, Secrets, Presidents and Dissent, examines the relationship between the President and the Intelligence Community and how he or she can hold it and its leaders responsible for its actions and intelligence assessments. Given the recent extraordinary activity our focus will be on the appropriate role of former leaders of the agencies which produce the secrets and how the President can and should respond if they speak out.
