Event Details

Every year in Texas more than 20,000 youth are arrested and charged as adults.  Currently 6,500 people are in Texas state prisons for crimes they committed before they could legally vote.

On  November 17-18, 2017, the Lone Star Justice Alliance and its partners, the Texas Inmate Family Association, Texas Criminal Justice Coalition, American Civil Liberties Union, Epicenter, the Campaign for Youth Justice, and the Campaign for Fair Sentencing of Youth will host the first annual Second Look Summit. This Summit brings together families of those currently and formerly incarcerated, formerly incarcerated youth, survivors of crime, and community stakeholders to discuss the incarceration of youth in Texas prisons.

Sincerely,

The Lone Star Justice Alliance Team

LSJA provides direct and strategic litigation to youth who were tried and sentenced in the adult criminal justice system. The United States Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed that because adolescents are poor decision-makers, are more vulnerable to negative peer influences, and have a greater capacity for rehabilitation and change than adults, these youth must be given a meaningful opportunity for release. LSJA will build on the Court’s findings to ensure that youth are never sentenced to die in prison.
