Digital data is easy to distribute, but can disappear easily when websites change. Join the University of Washington Libraries, the City of Seattle, Seattle Data for Good, and others for a one-day event as we locate data to archive from the federal government and find ways to archive what web crawlers cannot grab.
Data Rescue Seattle will be held at the University of Washington on February 25, from 12pm-6:30pm in the Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Feel free to arrive late or leave early -- we appreciate any time you can volunteer for this event. Please bring your own laptop.
Much of our day will involve collaboratively identifying important online public resources and datasets, nominating URLs to the Internet Archive's End of Term project, using/adapting/creating tools to acquire and back-up further datasets, and getting the word around to others who can do the same.
How can you help?
We are in need of researchers, developers, coders, archivists, scientists, librarians, bloggers, writers and interested community members to help capture and archive federally produced vulnerable datasets.
Can't come? Contribute to the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative (EDGI), which formed after the recent election to advocate for evidence-based environmental policy, and which hosted the first Data Rescue event in Toronto.
