Event description

Description

Digital data is easy to distribute, but can disappear easily when websites change. Join the University of Washington Libraries, the City of Seattle, Seattle Data for Good, and others for a one-day event as we locate data to archive from the federal government and find ways to archive what web crawlers cannot grab.

Data Rescue Seattle will be held at the University of Washington on February 25, from 12pm-6:30pm in the Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Feel free to arrive late or leave early -- we appreciate any time you can volunteer for this event. Please bring your own laptop.

This event is modeled on the national DataRefuge movement organized by EDGI and Penn's Program in the Environmental Humanities and on DataRescue events at institutions around the United States.

Much of our day will involve collaboratively identifying important online public resources and datasets, nominating URLs to the Internet Archive's End of Term project, using/adapting/creating tools to acquire and back-up further datasets, and getting the word around to others who can do the same.

How can you help?
We are in need of researchers, developers, coders, archivists, scientists, librarians, bloggers, writers and interested community members to help capture and archive federally produced vulnerable datasets.

Can't come? Contribute to the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative (EDGI), which formed after the recent election to advocate for evidence-based environmental policy, and which hosted the first Data Rescue event in Toronto.

Transportation:
Lightrail and numerous bus routes come to UW from around Seattle. Parking is also available in the main parking garage on nearby. The Odegaard Undergraduate Library is located on the west side of Red Square. The building opens at 12pm. Transporation information: http://www.washington.edu/facilities/transportation/

How can I contact the organizer with my questions?
Email us at datarescueseattle@gmail.com

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
It would be helpful if you did! We'll try to have all the information we need at our disposal too.

Can I update my registration information?
Yes! Please email us.

What if I signed up and can no longer attend?
We anticipate high interest in this event. If you can no longer make it, we'd appreciate a heads up so we can release a spot to someone who may be on the waitlist.
