Seattle Center Festál presents Dia de Muertos Festival Seattle: a FREE community festival in partnership with the Dia de Muertos Festival Committee. Dia de Muertos Festival Seattle was established in 1998 in the South Park neighborhood of Seattle and has been part of Festál since 2003. It is a popular festival produced by a committee of volunteers dedicated to preserving Latinx culture and traditions, with a mission to build bridges of understanding and bonds of union between families and communities.

Experience the 2021 Dia de Muertos Seattle Festival

With roots in ancient Mesoamerican civilizations from Aztecs to Toltec, Dia de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, honors the spirits of departed loved ones, reconnecting through celebration and remembrance. Dia de Muertos survived centuries of colonial oppression and remains a treasured holiday throughout the modern Latinx diaspora. It is not a day to mourn, but rather a time to celebrate that Death is an integral, ever-present part of Life and we remain connected through the cycle.

The 2021 Dia de Muertos Festival Seattle program also commemorates the 500th Anniversary of the Fall of Tenochtitlan – a significant anniversary because there is an active movement to correct the numerous myths and misconceptions associated with this event, to address the narrative around Spanish colonialism/conquering of ancient cultures, and to continue the work to de-colonize people’s thinking.

October 30 – November 7: in person

11am – 9pm at Fisher Pavilion

Dia de Muertos Festival Seattle offers the Fisher Pavilion for a week-long Community Ofrenda (altar) dedicated to the departed lost to COVID-19. The community altars will provide space to celebrate a loved one by placing an offering of favorite items, (fruit, drink, etc.), a photo (if desired) and colorful scented flowers, ornaments, and music to welcome the spirit. The space will also include an art & tapete (traditional sand painting) exhibit, personal altar displays constructed by members of the community, along with a monumental altar in the style of Michoacan State and an hourly video program.

Dia de Muertos Seattle Festival is part of Seattle Center Festál 2021, a year-long series of virtual festivals to connect people in ways that build understanding, dispel stereotypes and generate pride among the generations who participate in these shared experiences. The series began in 1997 to offer a central place for festivals to invite the public to join in their unique cultural expressions. Seattle Center Festál is Where the World Gathers, and is produced with the generous support of T-Mobile, 4Culture, the City of Seattle and Seattle Center Foundation.
