Description

Seating and Positioning 101

Course Description:

This course will provide participants with foundational knowledge and understanding of both postural development, and the principles of seating and positioning across the 24-hour cycle. We will identify the seating and positioning impact of a number of common diagnoses that you typically encounter.

Further we will explore why we need good posture, postural deviations and possible strategies, along with identifying best practice guidelines to address the end-user’s needs through seating and positioning provision. In particular we will consider the main issues when assessing and determining the end-user’s postural, seating and positioning needs, including pelvis, trunk and head position, communication, reach, skin integrity, and self-propelling or driving skills.

Participants will leave with greater confidence in what to consider with regards to seating and positioning, and with examples of different postures to consider for their clients.

Objectives:

1. Explain what postural development involves
2. Recognize the impact of postural alignment upon the seating and functional skills of the individual
3. Identify the key areas to be considered when assessing the seating and positioning ability and needs of the client
4. Recall the impact of positioning and disease upon the functional skills of the client
5. Describe the postural presentation of the client using International Seating terminology
6. List the positions that should be considered within a 24-hour period for their client
7. Underline the importance of identifying and agreeing goals for seating and positioning with the client and or their caregivers
