Season of Light
Special Holiday Presentation
This perennial holiday favorite is a show about the coldest and darkest of seasons—a time which holds some of the warmest and brightest celebrations of the year. Narrated by NPR’s Noah Adams, the show explores the traditions surrounding the world’s most endearing holiday customs, all of which involve lighting up the winter season—from the burning Yule log to the lighting of luminarias, to sparkling Christmas tree lights and candles in windows. The program also explores possible astronomical explanations for the star that led the Wise Men to Bethlehem. Come and celebrate the season through the wonder of the planetarium’s star-filled sky.
Please note: All seats are general admission with no assigned seat numbers. For best seat selection, it's a good idea to arrive 15-20 minutes before showtime. For the safety of our visitors and in order to prevent accidents, late entry is not allowed. Likewise, once a show has started, if you leave the planetarium for any reason, re-entry is not allowed due to safety regulations in the darkened environment.
When purchasing online tickets with a credit card, a small fee is added to the ticket price by the company that does the processing; in other words, not by the college or planetarium. One benefit of purchasing online is the convenience of having guaranteed tickets in case of a sold-out show. Another benefit is that you can bypass the ticket desk in the planetarium lobby on arrival, and proceed directly to the planetarium entrance for seating when the doors open.
Young Harris College’s O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium features a state-of-the-art GOTO Chronos Space Simulator star projector with a full-dome digital projection system, the Sky-Skan Definiti, in a 40-foot dome theater with 5.1 surround sound. This unique combination represents the next generation in planetarium technology, creating an immersive and engaging image over the entire dome surface and a powerful “you-are-there” experience for the audience. With comfortable seating for 104, Rollins Planetarium offers public shows and educational opportunities for school groups throughout the year. Rollins Planetarium was made possible through the philanthropy of Wayne and Grace Rollins.
The 2014-2015 season at O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium features more than 30 Friday-evening public shows. Public planetarium shows, with the exception of cosmic concerts, include a live-narrated “seasonal stargazing” segment in addition to the featured full-dome program.
O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium is located on the YHC campus in Young Harris, Ga. From US Highway 76/GA Highway 515, turn into the campus at the traffic light in Young Harris, then take a left at the end of the street. Rollins Planetarium is located in the second building on the left, the Maxwell Center.
The Young Harris College Observatory features a 14-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and is open immediately following the last planetarium show on Friday evening if skies are clear. There is no additional charge for visiting the observatory, which is located around 1.5 miles from campus at Twiggs Overlook on the exit road leading from Brasstown Valley Resort. Maps are available at the planetarium. Observing sessions last up to one hour and include a guided tour of the constellations. Weather permitting, the observatory is open on the same dates the planetarium is open.
