Event description

Description

You may have seen several in your neighborhood. You may have even lived in one. From 1908 to 1942, Sears, Roebuck & Company sold about 65,000 ready-to-build kit homes through catalogs. Our presenter, Lara Solonickne, will lead her audience through the story of these unique homes. Despite the rash of tear-downs in the Chicago area, some of these houses have managed to survive. They are undiscovered treasures hidden in plain sight. Solonickne will explain how to identify and authenticate a Sears home and what makes them historically significant.

We are having an encore presentation of this unique program in response to requests after Lara presented here over three years ago. If you missed it once, make sure you enjoy it this year! (And frankly, the program is so packed with information and new homes to discuss, most folks will learn more a second time.) Come learn about their appeal, how they were sold and made, and where you can see local examples today.

About our speaker: Laura Solonickne is an architectural enthusiast, founder of Sears Homes of Chicagoland (sears-homes.com), and adjunct professor at College of DuPage. She holds a degree from Northwestern University. Her expertise and passion for uncovering the hidden stories behind these old houses has led her to be featured by FOX 32 News, Curbed, McMansion Hell, the Chicago Tribune, Yale University Press, The Birmingham News, and more.

Tickets are $8 for Adults and $5 for GEHS Members & Students 18 and under. Refreshments will be served.
