Event Details

From the Jewish bourgeoisie of Germany to the intelligentsia of Israel, from European Zionism to Yishuv politics, Gershom Scholem’s life is a touchstone for scholarly interpretations of these milieus.  However, most of what we know about his life comes from his autobiography From Berlin to Jerusalem, which Scholem wrote and rewrote with a cultural and political agenda in mind.  Is there another Gershom Scholem to be found in his private correspondence and diaries?  Was Scholem’s world not quite how he represented it publicly?

Jay Geller is the Samuel Rosenthal Professor of Judaic Studies at Case Western Reserve University. He specializes in Jewish and modern European history, with a focus on Germany.

This event is free and open to the public.  A light lunch will be provided.  If you have any special dietary needs, please contact Laura Lechner, Center for Jewish Studies' outreach and program coordinator, at jwst@umn.edu

Parking is available in the Church Street garage, the Washington Ave. ramp, or the 4th Street ramp.

Co-sponsored by the U of M Department of German, Scandinavian and Dutch, Department of History, and the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies
