Talk: Promoting greater marine protection around Ascension Island, a UK Overseas Territory in the central Atlantic, Kate Downes

Ascension Island Government (AIG) is considering in full the best way to manage its marine environment (throughout its Exclusive Fishing Zone: EFZ), taking into account the need to protect marine biodiversity alongside the economic driver to generate much-needed income for the Island. The creation of a large-scale MPA at Ascension Island is a key commitment of the UK Government’s “Blue Belt” initiative, launched in its 2015 manifesto, and is currently the highest-profile conservation issue affecting the Territory. However, there are still critical knowledge gaps that need to be addressed in order to identify those areas that would benefit most from spatial or temporal protection measures. For this reason, AIG has deferred formal designation of the MPA (or network of MPAs) until 2019, while existing scientific data is compiled and analysed and new research can take place to enable informed decisions on the final placement of marine reserves.

Bring food to put on BBQ and salads to share. Tea, coffee, squash and sauces provided.

Cost of talk £3 to pay on the door.
