Description

On View: November 12 – December 31, 2016

Opening Reception: Saturday, November 12, 2016 from 5 – 8pm

Zevitas Marcus is pleased to present You Play B-Ball? Why You No Play A-Ball? an exhibition of new paintings by Sean-McGee Phetsarath. This exhibition will be on view November 12 through December 31, 2016 with an opening reception Saturday, November 12.

Raised in a small Texas town under the careful watch of Asian immigrant parents, Sean-McGee Phetsarath grew up seeking entertainment through digital culture. He is part of a new generation of artists whose visual language has been strongly influenced by life as experienced through television and the computer screen. Fascinated by iconic 90’s pastimes such as 16-bit video games, Saturday morning cartoons, and dial up internet, Phetsarath’s affection for the digital sublime began to alter his view of reality at an early age.

Phetsarath’s paintings draw from myriad art historical and pop culture sources. Using simplified forms and evocative colors, his subjects exist in a shallow space that mimics the superficial depth provided by the now omnipresent computer screen. Provocative and playful, Phetsarath’s work daringly defies traditional values while exploring the conflicts generated by the mutability of contemporary culture. Combining the absurdity found in digital media with his own personal anecdotes, Phetsarath creates a fantasy world that portrays a unique and humorous perspective on his Asian-American childhood.

Sean-McGree Phetsarath is a 2017 MFA candidate at the San Francisco Art Institute. He has exhibited nationally in both solo and group shows since 2012 at locations including Steven Zevitas Gallery in Boston, Thierry Goldberg Gallery in New York City, the Contemporary Art Museum of St. Louis, Campfire Gallery in San Francisco, Circuit 12 Contemporary in Dallas, as well as the stARTup Art Fair in Los Angeles. Phetsarath was selected as a noteworthy artist in New American Paintings, No. 120 in 2015, where his work was also featured on the magazine cover. He currently lives and works in San Francisco, CA.
