Sean McFate will chat about and sign his latest book The New Rules of War: Victory in the Age of Durable Disorder.

The book is an urgent exploration of warfare—past, present, and future—and offers ten new principles—many of which confront the entrenched status quo—we must follow in future military engagement if we want to win.

While weapons, tactics, technology, leadership, and objectives might change over time, war itself is timeless, as is our desire to go into battle. But in this devastating, difficult time, what does battle look like? What is the future of war? How can we survive? And if Americans are drawn into major armed conflict, is victory possible?

To answer these questions, McFate calls upon the legends of military study, as well as his own experience, to carefully construct the new rules we must understand and implement in future military engagement if we want to win. Some of these principles are ancient, others are new, but all will permanently shape war today and tomorrow.

In The New Rules of War, McFate argues that we are living in an age of Durable Disorder—a period of unrest created by numerous factors: China’s rise, Russia’s resurgence, America’s retreat, global terrorism, international criminal empires, climate change, dwindling natural resources, bloody civil wars, and more.

Sean McFate is an expert in international relations and war, and writes action thrillers based on his own experiences. He’s a former paratrooper and officer in the U.S. Army’s storied 82nd ȳAirborne Division. There he led several units including a Stinger Missile Platoon, and graduated from the Jungle Warfare School in Panama. After his military service, McFate became a private military contractor, operating mostly in Africa. Some of his missions included helping raise a new army for Liberia after its 14-year civil war, preventing a potential genocide in Rwanda and Burundi, shipping arms from Eastern Europe to Africa, reconnoitering armed groups in the Sahara, and other projects.

McFate has since hung up his holsters and is currently a professor of grand strategy and warfare at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and the National Defense University, the Pentagon’s top war college in Washington, DC. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council and an adjunct social scientist at the RAND Corporation, both think tanks, where he works on nationalsecurity issues. Previously, he was a Bernard L. Schwartz Fellow at the New America Foundation.
