A consultant to over 150 U.S. independent and public schools, Kim John Payne, M.Ed., has been a counselor, educator, and researcher for 27 years. He regularly delivers keynote addresses at international conferences for educators, parents, and therapists. Payne helps families and schools explore social difficulties with siblings and classmates; attention and behavioral issues; defiance, aggression, addiction, self-esteem; and the vital role of a simple, balanced life.
Not only will this presentation provide a better understanding of when, how, and why exclusion occurs, it will provide simple, practical tools for parents and teachers to use with children to either stop or prevent it from happening.
• Under the Radar:
While bullying is a big problem, subtle exclusion is much more common, can go on for a long time and can have a big impact.
• No Blame:
Whether the child is the initiator, the receiver, or the bystander, this approach encourages accountability without blame and provides an opportunity for our community to create common understanding, language, and tools-all related to the Social Inclusion process.
• The Power of Calm:
How powerful it is for a parent to stay calm and focused in the face of difficult social situations at school and in the neighborhood.
• Parent Coaching:
While schools can do a lot to help children work through situations of exclusion, parents can be very effective in giving their children some age-appropriate and simple strategies to avoid being caught up in the dramatic cycle.
• Replacing Reactivity with Resiliency:
Why bringing greater balance into your family to deal with the fast-paced lifestyle that has become the "new normal" can build resiliency in your child’s social interactions and build friendships.
