San Francisco, the “City by the Bay”, is a hotbed of innovation and entrepreneurship. This pioneering spirit is inspiring new models and systems that address many of the big issues facing our planet, including the health and resilience of our oceans. Ocean sustainability is an exciting space for social entrepreneurs and impact investors who are looking for opportunities to create positive change.
This event highlights entrepreneurs who are increasing ocean sustainability through business, and will discuss developing areas of innovation that could potentially turn the tide for our largest natural resource.
Your participation in this interactive event – whether you’re working in art, agriculture, community development, or tech – will help us uncover opportunities for innovation and collaboration across disciplines. We all hold a piece of the solution.

Sea Change Entrepreneurship is the launch event for the SOCAP:Oceans initiative, which will culminate at SOCAP13, September 3-6 at San Francisco's Fort Mason Center.
Maria Finn – author of “The Whole Fish”
Maria Finn is a writer based in Sausalito. Her most recent book is “The Whole Fish, How Adventurous Eating of Seafood Will Make You Healthier, Sexier and Help Save the Ocean.” (TED Books 2012). She has written for a wide range of publications, including Sunset Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Audubon, Wine Spectator and many others.
This year she received a grant from the Society of Environmental Journalists to write about SF Bay herring and is soon traveling to Costa Rica to write about hammerhead sharks for The Washington Post. She has recently given talks about sustainable seafood at the California Academy of the Sciences, SXSW-Eco, and Seattle Chefs Collaborative. She is currently writing a novel based on her experiences working on an all female commercial fishing boat in Alaska. Her website iswww.mariafinn.com.
Beau Perry – Olazul
Beau Perry received an MBA in Sustainable Management from Presidio Graduate School and graduated from Georgetown's School of Foreign Service . He has over ten years experience as an entrepreneur in both internet and aquaculture ventures. Over decades of backroads travel along the Baja Peninsula, he witnessed a rapid decline of the health of coastal ecosystems and rural fishing communities. Exploring these issues further, Perry realized that these peoples' stories reflected a growing global crisis of degraded marine fisheries and habitat.
Beau launched Olazul in 2009, inspired by the concept of developing new forms of artisanal aquaculture as direct alternatives to overfishing. He currently drives Olazul to put social innovation into practice, as a vehicle for sustainable transition in Mexico's Gulf of California and beyond.
Martin Reed – i love blue sea
Martin’s vision of streamlining our food systems through logistics and technology has kept him a leader and innovator in sustainability. Reed is founder and CEO of Blue Sea Labs, dedicated to bringing transparency to food supply chains.
In 2010, he launched ilovebluesea.com, the world’s first online marketplace for sustainable seafood. Fishermen from 15 ports nationwide sell direct to end consumers, bypassing the traditional supply chain and earning more margin for themselves while ensuring quality remains intact.
Currently, he is developing logistics software to empower smaller producers of perishable goods to compete against larger players.
Rachel Weidinger - Upwell
Rachel is the Executive Director of Upwell, a nonprofit PR firm with one client, the ocean. At Upwell, Rachel leads the development of cutting edge big listening practices. She couples this big data approach with the resiliency-increasing tactic of campaigning across a distributed network to increase online attention to ocean issues. Because of Rachel's vision, the ocean community knows the baseline of online conversation for its issues for the first time.
Previously, Rachel was the Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications at TechSoup Global where she provided marketing vision and leadership for TechSoup Global, and the TechSoup Global Network of partners in 36 countries. She has also worked with social enterprises including NTEN, Common Knowledge, the Black Rock Arts Foundation, SF Environment, Copia, and the Xtracycle Foundation.
Rachel has a B.Phil. in Interdisciplinary Studies from Miami University's Western College Program, and completed the coursework for a masters in Arts Policy and Administration at Ohio State University. When she’s not working to save the ocean, she makes preserves, swims in the Bay, and gardens at her tiny home in San Francisco. She is obsessed with whale sharks."

SOCAP:Oceans - Investing in the Link between People and Planet
There is a growing awareness of the connection between our well-being as humans and the health of our oceans. To fuel innovation and attract a broader set of stakeholders to participate in the sustainability of our oceans, the SOCAP:Oceans initiative will reframe and energize the current conversation around healthy oceans. By empowering individuals and organizations from diverse communities to see themselves as agents of change, SOCAP:Oceans will catalyze and promote the preservation of aquatic ecosystems, coastal livelihoods, and sustainable seafood supply chains.
UNDERCURRENTS, a multifaceted program series by Circadian Media Lab, believes in "unlikely alliances" - bringing together diverse and unexpected individuals and groups to work together around a theme or problem, with the goal of surfacing new perspectives and creativity. By opening a space for imaginative dialogue and collaborative action, we can work together towards interventions that create shifts at a cultural level and re-imagine the world we want to live in.
Circadian Media Lab is committed to bringing about meaningful cultural change through engaging and immersive experiences. From convenings and interactive events to immersive media content, Circadian creates context-specific projects that engage, inspire, and educate. Currently, Circadian is leading the content creation for SOCAP:Oceans.
Circadian CEO Jeff Leifer has worked at the intersection of finance, media and technology for over three decades. Jeffʼs passions have drawn him all over the world in connection with global initiatives, working alongside internationally recognized dissidents such as Andrei Sakharov, negotiating nuclear non-proliferation accords as a State Department liaison, and helping to develop new international markets.
Jeff has served on the board of many non-proﬁts committed to the environment, arts and meaningful change in the culture. He is the founder of Leading With Wisdom and a co-founder of HUB Oakland. His website is jeffleifer.com.
