Description

You are cordially invited to the first annual Affordable Learning $olutions Faculty Recognition and Vendor Showcase to be held on Friday, September 29, 2017, from 11 - 1 in Montezuma Hall. Faculty from Anthropology, Geography, Chemistry, Political Science, Math, and Public Health will be recognized for their efforts to save students money and increase student success. The event is hosted by Instructional Technology Services and Montezuma Publishing/Aztec Shops.

Several vendors will be on campus demonstrating products and programs aimed at saving students money. This event is a chance for faculty to investigate low and no-cost quality options for course materials and learn about open educational resources, library eBooks, the SDSU Immediate Access program, and custom authoring and printing options. Heavy hors d'oeuvres, including vegetarian options, will be available throughout the event.

We sincerely hope you will attend. Please use this Eventbrite form to register. We can accommodate up to 80 attendees.

BACKGROUND: In Spring 2016, San Diego State University successfully applied for two grants: the CSU Affordable Learning Solutions grant ($20,000) and the California State AB798 AB798 College Textbook Affordability Act of 2015 grant ($44,000). Both of these grants are intended to fund activities that promote the use of more affordable, or in the case of AB798, free textbooks and other instructional materials. Activities include outreach, awareness, recognition, faculty stipends, training, and support.

The Immediate Access Program, the primary focus of the SDSU Affordable Learning $olutions grant, inserts digital textbooks into the Blackboard Learning Management System. Beginning Spring, 2016 through Spring 2017, over 3200 students have participated with savings over $232,000.

AB798 was established to encourage faculty to adopt lower cost, high quality open educational resources (OER) including the use of free textbooks. CHEM200 and 202 switched to a free OpenStax textbook and negotiated reduced pricing on supplemental materials. Over two semesters, 1600+ students saved almost $181,000.
