With 80 journalists and media workers killed, over 300 in detention and 60 held hostage, 2018 was the worst year on record for violence and abuse against journalists. A free media continues to be a crucial element to a functioning democracy and one that needs protecting. Despite this, there has been an increase in restrictive laws to stifle freedom of expression and prevent the functioning of independent media.

The British Embassy in Copenhagen, in partnership with UNDP Nordic Office, UN City Copenhagen and International Media Support (IMS), invite you to join this SDG Talk on how we can defend the rights of journalists, support those who are imprisoned and speak out against restrictive laws to promote democracy and human rights.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Anders Samuelsen will be delivering the keynote speech and debating the challenges and way forward will be Christina Lamb OBE, Chief Foreign Correspondent for Sunday Times and author, Simi Jan, award winning Danish journalist and Gulnara Akhundova, international head of the global response department at IMS.

Following the opening discussion and debate, there will be light refreshments served for those attending and an opportunity for attendees to discuss the findings and outcomes of the debate.
