Event description
Engage in dynamic learning and conversation on the role of intersectionality in creating a more equitable and sustainable future.

About this Event

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit is an annual training conference focused on engaging youth with sustainable development and the SDGs through immersive opportunities for learning, discussion, and networking. This hands-on event seeks to equip youth with the knowledge and skills they need to champion sustainable development and to develop innovative solutions to social, environmental, and economic issues.

2019 Theme

The third annual Summit, Intersectionality and the SDGs, will explore how complex systems of privilege and oppression can contribute to or challenge sustainable development. Through workshops, panels, and keynote presentations that discuss sustainable development through an intersectional lens, the SDG Summit will highlight the need for multidisciplinary, inclusive collaboration across all sectors of society in implementing the SDGs.

Keynote Presentation - Larissa Crawford

Join us in welcoming Larissa Crawford to our 2019 SDG Summit as we prepare to learn and engage with her keynote presentation, Centering Indigenous Sovereignty and Reconciliation in UN SDG Implementation. This keynote presentation will seek to build our understanding of what it means to be Indigenous in a Canadian and global context, which will be followed by an exploration of what Indigenous sovereignty is and how it is driving sustainable development. The presentation will close with a comprehensive analysis of how UNDRIP, the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, and the 2019 MMIW Report must be used to frame and enhance UN SDG implementation.

Workshops and Panel Discussion

Throughout the day, you will be able to participate in two workshop rotations of your choosing and a panel discussion. The SDG Summit will end with a synthesis activity facilitated by our Keynote Speaker, Larissa Crawford.

About the Organizer

The SDG Summit is hosted by the Sustainable Development Goals Alliance (SDGA), a student-led organization based out of the Office of Sustainability at the University of Calgary. Since its inception in Fall 2017, the SDGA has engaged over 700+ students and community members in learning about sustainable development, while also serving as a campus platform for discussion, collaboration, and advocacy for the SDGs.
