The Sculpture Milwaukee lecture series is a complimentary lecture experience to add background and information to the outdoor sculpture exhibit. It is sponsored by Guardian Fine Art Storage and Portrait Society Gallery.
Dasha Kelly, a former Pfister Narrator, will present "Embedded Language," a discussion on perspective, projection and the impact of personal story as it relates to Sanford Biggers' BAM (Seated Warrior), 2017.
This powerful piece is part of a series in which the artist marks and mutilates wooden African "power" figures created for the tourist trade, then casts them in bronze, to both hide and exaggerate the violence done to the original. Biggers' work refers to the history of killings of unarmed African Americans. The serene pose of Warrior contrasts with the violence done to its body; this jarring juxtaposition is at the heart of Bigger's work.
Sculpture Milwaukee is a free outdoor urban sculpture experience that debuted in downtown Milwaukee in 2017, and returns to Wisconsin Avenue in 2018 with 20+ works by internationally, nationally and locally renowned artists.
