Ali Laventhol, along with her writing partner and Script Anatomy founder Tawnya Bhattacharya, is currently a Writer/Co-Producer on NBC’s “The Night Shift.”  She has written on TNT’s “Perception,” “The Client List” on Lifetime and USA’s “Fairly Legal.” Tawnya and Ali’s NURSE JACKIE spec was selected for NBC’s Writers On the Verge Program in 2010 and Ali has been a reader for WOTV submissions each subsequent year, reading, scoring and writing coverage on several hundred scripts.

Ali started in the industry as a Visual Effects Compositor, working on feature film projects including TERMINATOR: SALVATION, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN (II & III), DÉJÀ VU and MY BLOODY VALENTINE. In 2011 Ali was a producer on the indie feature PART TIME FABULOUS, which went on to win awards at the Berkshire Int’l Film Festival, Monaco Charity Film Festival and Albequerque Film Festival.

Having used the Script Anatomy development tools in her own writing, Ali is thrilled to bring them to a class setting where each writer will develop their project step by step with weekly feedback in a supportive environment.

Laventhol is repped by ICM Partners.

"To say Ali is a great instructor would be an understatement, whatever is ten times great, that's Ali. As someone who's worked in a writer's room, Ali runs her class very much like a room. It was like practicing for the real deal. I've taken writing classes outside of SA and I always go back to SA because the classes are more professional and the atmosphere is more serious and structured. I've been in classes that run late or students get off topic and it can get frustrating. That doesn't happen here. A large portion of that is because of instructors like Ali.  Ali's someone who's very tuned in to the story you're trying to tell and helping you tell that specific story. The notes are almost always specific with examples and ideas on how to elevate your work. But Ali's also very honest about killing your "precious darlings" and does so in an absurdly patient manner."

~Jeane Wong (2016/17 NBC Writers on the Verge, Winner, Universal Cable Productions Pitch Fest 2016, former PGA Diversity Workshop fellow, Script Coordinator on ARROW for the CW)

"I've taken the Televisionary class and the Draft class with Ali and have been impressed both times with how she maintains a warm and encouraging environment while giving you the tools you need to take your material to the next level. She is experienced and knowledgeable about how story works and she will not just help you find what's not working in your script, but also help you strategize on how to fix it. I have absolutely no doubt that Script Anatomy has made me a much stronger writer. I have won and placed in multiple contests with scripts I've written in their classes. I can't recommend them highly enough!"

Rowan Wheeler (2016 Tracking Board Launch Pad Pilot Contest Top 5%, 2016 Sundance Episodic Story Lab 2nd Rounder)

"Ali Laventhol is a great teacher. She is certainly accomplished as a television writer, but what makes her uniquely effective in guiding other writers is her discerning eye for getting to the heart of a story. With surprising patience and warmth, Ali runs her class like a professional writer’s room. The ready, willing and resilient stand out. You will get the most out of her class when you come prepared -- in your own work and in having read that of your peers. Ali's approach is keenly focused on identifying and building upon meaning and relationship progressions, with an appreciation for structure. I have loved every single class I’ve taken at Script Anatomy, and I can’t wait for my next one with Ali Laventhol!"

Pamela García Rooney, 2016 PAGE Screenwriting Awards Quarterfinalist

"Ali is knowledgeable, patient, supportive, and enthusiastic. She and the guidelines set up in the Script Anatomy classes break down the process of writing a Pilot to the smallest (but most important) details so that when I actually dove into my outline and then my first draft, the work was already done. Ali and the Script Anatomy classes changed the way I write and the way I develop a new project."

~ Paul Luoma, Executive Assistant, NBC

"Ali Laventhol creates a warm and positive class environment that makes you feel proud of the pages you bring into class. I took the Outline to First Draft workshop with Ali, and with both her help and the notes of my classmates, emerged with a shiny spec that I felt confident using to apply for the various studio fellowship programs. She also teaches exercises that build on the Script Anatomy tools that help you improve your script with each pass. Before, when I went to rewrite, I would just go through the script trying to make it "better." But after taking Ali's class, I can look at specific aspects to improve and check off a list of elements that each scene should have. I left Ali’s class knowing I became a better writer."

Kay Kaanapu, 2016 Stage32 Happy Writers Contest Finalist

Tawnya Bhattacharya is a writer, writing instructor, and founder of Script Anatomy. Bhattacharya’s teaching career began at Writers Boot Camp from 2005 – 2008. Having experienced gaps in continuing education for screenwriters as both a student and a teacher, Tawnya found she had both the craft to be able to quickly discern what was missing and the rhetoric to articulate it to students, so she created Script Anatomy -- a unique curriculum to give writers practical development, writing and rewriting tools based on her own process. She launched Script Anatomy in 2011. Uniquely, Bhattacharya brings both a ten-year teaching background and professional writing experience to Script Anatomy's curriculum. She most recently has guest-taught workshops with ISA (International Screenwriters Association) and the Disney | ABC Writing Program and writes a column in Script Magazine called "Your TV Guide." Currently a writer on Freeform's "Famous in Love," Tawnya has also written on NBC’s “The Night Shift,” TNT’s “Perception”“The Client List” at Lifetime and on USA’s “Fairly Legal,” with her writing partner, Ali Laventhol. Repped by ICM Partners, they are former NBC Writers on the Verge fellows, winning one of 8 spots out of 1200 applicants. The team also made semi-finalists for the ABC Disney Fellowship before getting a job that took them out of the running, and have developed projects with Battle PlanFresh InkCinestar and Lionsgate. Tawnya was also a FOX Writer’s Intensive fellow (FOX optioned her semi-autobiographical pilot).

Script Anatomy TV workshop alums and private clients have sold shows to or been staffed on several major networks, including: Showtime, NBC, ABC Family, USA, Sony.  SA writers have also made the semi-final and finalist round or won coveted spots on several Network Writing Program Fellowships and contests, incuding: Warner Brother Writers Workshop, NBC Writers On the Verge, CBS Writers Fellowship, Fox Diversity, ABC Disney Fellowship, NHMC (National Hispanic Media Coalition), Nicholl Fellowship in Writing, Final Draft's Big Break, Scriptapalooza, Page Screenwriting Contest and more.  For more about Script Anatomy visit

“Tawnya gives excellent notes to others on their creative process. She clearly understands the craft of writing. Her writing and her ability to connect with others will take her very far in the entertainment business.”

Tawnya is a dream to work with. She is a very talented writer! I believe her creative process will take her very far in this business. Her writing is poetic, lyrical and shows depth and complexity. She is every bit as strong on the page as she is in the room. She gives excellent notes to others on their creative process. She clearly understands the craft of writing. Her writing and her ability to connect with others will take her very far in the entertainment business. I highly recommend Tawnya.  -- Jen Grisanti, Story/Career Consultant Jen Grisanti Consultancy Inc., Writing Instructor with NBC for Writers on the Verge, author of the book Story Line: Finding Gold In Your Life Story, blogger for The Huffington Post

“She helped me hone my original vision for a one-hour pilot effectively and efficiently by fine tuning the plot to bring in a boat-load more emotion and heart to the characters – thus elevating my story big time.”

The secret’s out… I have known Tawnya for the past five years and she is a consummate pro. Her superb television writing skills plus story know-how are beyond superlative. She helped me hone my original vision for a one-hour pilot effectively and efficiently by fine tuning the plot to bring in a boat-load more emotion and heart to the characters – thus elevating my story big time. In what can often times be a lengthy and frustrating process creating original work, her patience and guidance made the process fun and exciting. She can do the same for you. – Michael Perri,  (Staffwriter NBC's STATE OF AFFAIRS, 2013/2014 NBC Writer's On The Verge Fellow, National Hispanic Media Coalition Writers Program Fellow 2012, 2012 Young and Hungry List, Repped by Echo Lake Management)

"If you want to jump start your writing career, Script Anatomy is the perfect place."

If you want to jump start your writing career, Script Anatomy is the perfect place. Tawnya's tools for structure and story pushed me to take my work to the next level. She showed me how to channel my ideas in an organized and systematic way. In her advanced pilot lab she aligned us as a team from day one, coached us from presenting an idea from concept, to pitch, to script. She ran the class like a writers' room so we could get a sense of the real world requirements of working on staff. Because she has worked as a TV writer for years, Tawnya brings her experience and all the lessons that she's learned into class and gives you the tools to navigate the room. Tawnya's approach is keenly-sharp and nurturing in a professional and enthusiastic way, all while keeping an eye on delivering the best story possible. Script Anatomy delivers tenfold.  - April Fitzsimmons (Staff writer ABC's SECRETS & LIES, 2013/2014 ABC/Disney Fellowship, Repped by APA & Brillstein)

“I had high hopes walking into Tawnya’s Script Anatomy Televisionary Workshop. My expectations were blown out of the water.”

I had high hopes walking into Tawnya’s Script Anatomy Televisionary Workshop. My expectations were blown out of the water. Tawnya’s class was constructive, supportive and insightful. She isn’t afraid to give you the notes you need to hear. Even better, she supports you with the right tools to squeeze out the talent. I’m truly amazed at how much my writing was elevated after going through her workshop. And when looking around at the other writers she mentors, I’m impressed to see that I’m not the only one. If you’ve got the talent, Tawnya can foster it and bring it to the next level. I seriously can’t express how great she is. I’m so glad I walked into that Script Anatomy workshop and feel so privileged to have Tawnya on my side, helping me through the world of TV writing. – Daireen Galeano (NLMC/NHMC TV Writing Program Fellow, 2012/2013 CBS Writing Program Fellow)

“Tawnya is extremely knowledgeable and supportive and I recommend her to anyone seeking a teacher.”

What sets Tawnya apart from other teachers I’ve had is her unmatched enthusiasm for the art and craft of writing. She has a deep understanding of what makes stories work, and is great at communicating that to her students. Her class was always warm and open, but also very focused. People were encouraged to speak up, but if things got off topic, she would get everyone focused on writing again. Tawnya is extremely knowledgeable and supportive and I recommend her to anyone seeking a teacher. -- Kiyong Kim (2010-2011 Nickelodeon Writing Fellowship recipient, 2012/2013 NBC Writers On The Verge Fellow, blogger @ Kiyong's Blog of Creative Pursuits)

“Tawnya was the best screenwriting instructor I could have asked for.”

Tawnya was the best screenwriting instructor I could have asked for. I am certainly a better writer  for having had her as my teacher and am very lucky to have her continued support. She has a wonderful ability to get to the heart of storytelling with clear insight and determined precision. She has a no-nonsense style with a nurturing heart. I endorse her teaching one hundred percent.   -- Wendy B., Screen & TV Writer

“Tawnya Bhattacharya is like a screenwriting personal trainer.”

Everyone has an idea. But to turn that idea into a 100-page screenplay takes dedication, discipline and hours of work. Tawnya Bhattacharya is like a screenwriting personal trainer. She’ll help you to whip that underdeveloped 98-pound weakling of an idea into a full-blown feature-length commercial screenplay. You’ll love the results.    -- Tim Grant (Optioned writer, Repped by UTA, Optioned Screenwriter & Blogger @ Post-Mortem Depression

"Her class stands out in the overly saturated arena of TV writing classes, books, and seminars."

“As a working television writer, Tawnya understands the inner function (or dysfunction) of “the writer.”  This, coupled with her innate gift for teaching, make her class stand out in the overly saturated arena of TV writing classes, books, and seminars.  Not only was her class informational, enhancing both my story and structure skills, but it was inspirational, fun, and offered a supportive environment for every participant.  But, what really matters is this: Tawnya made my work better." -- Eva Taylor (2015 NBC Writers on the Verge fellow; repped by UTA)

"The guidance you'll receive throughout the roller coaster ride is unparalleled."

Tawnya Bhattacharya's Televisionary Writer's Workshop is the place to go if you're ready to write like a professional. The pace is fast, the expectations are high, the deadlines are real, yet the guidance you'll receive throughout the roller coaster ride is unparalleled. As a rule, nobody should care more about your script than you do,but Tawnya frequently breaks this rule; whatever passion you bring to your script is guaranteed to be exceeded by her notes, ideas, and suggestions. This course supplies a safe, constructive, yet thoroughly challenging launch pad for any writer who's looking to grow...and start a career. -- Jason Romaine (writer/actor/comedian; current PAGE International Screenwriting Contest Quarterfinalist, The Humanitas Prize David & Lynn Angell Fellowship in comedy writing)

"This workshop is worth its weight in gold!"

The Televisionary Writers Workshop was one of the most valuable, most enjoyable, and most meaningful experiences I've had in my writing career.  And I promise you that's not hyperbole.  As a working television writer, Tawnya is a wealth of information -- information that is current and up-to-the-minute.  Tawnya's years of teaching and private coaching experience are beyond evident, and show up in her deep wisdom, perspective, and savvy.  And all of this is delivered with clarity, humor, and an honesty that's always supportive.  This workshop is worth its weight in gold! -- Blaed Spence (journalist and tv writer)
