When a rich uncle denies him his rightful inheritance and the hand in marriage of his beloved cousin (a wonderful Geneviève Bujold), society thief Jean-Paul Belmondo goes on a vengeful crime spree across Belle Époque Paris, London, and Brussels, unwittingly succumbing to the bourgeois greed that wronged him in the first place.
Louis Malle: This most unpredictable of filmmakers enriched cinema over a nearly forty-year career that took him from the peripheries of the French New Wave to the vanguard of American moviemaking.
