Description

Join experts from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) for a workshop on screening for suicide risk and an update on the neurobiology of suicide. This event is a collaboration between the Mental Health Association of Maryland and NIMH.

Agenda:

8:30am-9:00am: Registration **Coffee and donuts will be provided

9am-9:10am: Introductions

9:10am-10:30am: Lisa Horowitz, PhD

  • Recognize suicide as a national and global public health threat
  • Describe the implications of suicide epidemiology in the general medical setting, including emergency departments, inpatient medical/surgical units, outpatient clinics and school nurse settings.
  • Review the recommendation made by The Joint Commission that emphasized universal screening in medical settings
  • Describe research on suicide risk screening and management tools and how they are applied to real world clinical settings.

10:30am-10:40am: Break

10:40am- 11:50am: Elizabeth Ballard, PhD

  • Provide an overview of recent research on the neurobiology and epidemiology of suicide
  • Present research on potential interventions with rapid impact on suicidal thoughts

11:50am-12pm: Q&A

Continuing Education Credits: 3 Category I CEU credits are available for social workers licensed in Maryland at no cost. Other professionals can submit the Certificate of Attendance to the appropriate board for approval.
