About this Event

Overview

Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment are effective in a variety of settings. It’s has been proven particularly effective in hospital emergency departments and trauma centers with individuals with alcohol‐related injuries. SBIRT has also been shown to be effective in primary care settings, where it is incorporated into other routine medical assessments such as measuring blood pressure. This training focuses on screening procedures to identify risk; key motivational interviewing concepts and principles that are tied to effective use of the FLO (Feedback; Listen and Understand; Options Explored) brief intervention; and referral to treatment for patients with more serious substance use‐related problems.

Target Audience

The four-hour SBIRT training is free and is open to staff who are interested in delivering SBIRT Services and Serve as Trainers including: Psychologists, LMFTs and LCSWs, Registered Nurses, Certified Substance Use Disorder Treatment Counselors and Other Behavioral Health Specialists/Clinicians

Enrollment is limited to 25 participants.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the four-hour SBIRT Training session, participants should be able to:

1. Describe the background and rationale for conducting SBIRT in a variety of health settings

2. Explain how to utilize screening procedures to identify patients engaged in at‐risk substance use behaviors; and

3. (Demonstrate a three‐step motivational interviewing‐based brief intervention strategy to motivate patients to change their at‐risk behavior and/or seek treatment.

Continuing Education

A total of four (4.0) CE credits are available for the SBIRT Trainings

The training is approved by the Hawaii State Department of Health’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division for 4.0‐6.0 education content hours (CSAC, CCJP, CCS, CPS, CCDP‐D, and CSAPA). This program is approved by the National Association of Social Workers ‐ Hawai’I Chapter NASWHI‐CEP‐005 for up to four to six (4.0‐6.0) Social Work continuing education contact hours, zero (0) specifically in Ethics.

These trainings meet the qualifications for the provision of continuing education credits/ contact hours (CEs/CEHs) for the following disciplines:

UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. UCLA ISAP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

UCLA ISAP is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs (Provider #64812). UCLA ISAP maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. Course meets the qualifications for four to six (4.0‐6.0) hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCS, and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. UCLA ISAP is also an approved provider of continuing education for RADTs I/ II, CADCs‐CASs, CADCs I/II, CADCs‐CSs, and LAADCs (CCAPP,#2N‐00‐445‐1119), CATCs (ACCBC/ CAADE, #CP 20 872 C 0819), and CAODCs (CADTP, #151). Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #15455, for 4.0 to 6.0 contact hours. UNR CASAT is an approved provider of continuing education credit for NCACs I/II and MACs through the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug CE credit will be awarded at the conclusion of the training.

Partial credit will not be available for those participants who arrive late or leave early.
