Event description

Description

Sedition is pleased to present a screening by acclaimed artist Shezad Dawood of his 20-minute video work Towards The Possible Film (2014) at Soho House, 76 Dean Street cinema. The screening will be followed by a conversation between the artist and Oliver Basciano, Editor at Art Review.

Towards The Possible Film is a work that presents a parallel universe in which two astronauts appear on a dusty shore and make tentative steps into a rocky landscape before fraught meetings with the land’s inhabitants. The work’s nuanced depiction of interaction skillfully handles themes of colonisation, isolation and the relationship between people and environment. Through masterful use of cinematography, Dawood produces a work which is both atmospheric and dissonant.

Shezad Dawood is a London based artist who works with film, painting and photography to create elaborate, multifaceted works which bring together discrete elements. His works connect his experiences of travelling as a child with his diverse current research interests, which include science fiction, the occult, and ontology. Dawood has exhibited internationally, including at Venice Biennale, Marrakech Biennale, MACBA Barcelona, Busan Biennale and Nicholas Bourriaud’s Altermodern at Tate Britain.

Oliver Basciano is an art critic and writer who has since 2009, worked at ArtReview where he is now Editor (International). He also regularly writes for The Guardian and Spike Art Quarterly and has contributed texts to various artist's monographs. He sits on the board of trustees for both the grant giving The Elephant Trust and artist-led curatorial outfit The Woodmill.
