Event description

Description

In 2017 the ADA adopted a policy statement on “The Role of Dentistry in the Treatment of Sleep Related Breathing Disorders”

“These disorders characterized by disruptions in normal breathing patterns. Sleep breathing disorders (SBD) are potentially serious medical conditions caused by anatomical airway collapse and altered respiratory control mechanisms. Common SBDs include snoring, upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA has been associated with metabolic, cardiovascular, respiratory, dental and other diseases. In children, undiagnosed and/or untreated OSA can be associated with cardiovascular problems, impaired growth as well as learning and behavioral problems.”

It is estimated that 1-2% of children suffer from sleep breathing disorders and some 22 million adults suffer from sleep apnea with about 80% of those cases undiagnosed. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is one of the most commonly undiagnosed sleep disorders and awareness is growing in the dental community. In a recent study, over 50% of patients in a dental office screened high risk for OSA. As part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, Dental hygienists are at the front line when it comes to recognizing risks, signs and symptoms of OSA, and can educate their patients toward improved total health. This course will help the dental hygienist see the mouth from a whole new perspective.
