About this event

Join Art21 for a special screening and conversation with artist Diane Severin Nguyen.

Directed by Jessica Kingdon and Nathan Truesdell, the 2022 Oscar-nominees for their film “Ascension,” "Diane Severin Nguyen's Transfigurations" offers a look into the work and creative processes of the New York City-based artist.

“I try to work against that impulse to identify and get more towards a place of feeling," says Diane Severin Nguyen. "The moment that you speak or communicate, there's already mediation. There's something that's about intimacy that is actually more important than knowing." Fingernails, karaoke YouTubers, grass jelly, make-up tutorials, anti-war anthems, and mass produced trinkets all find themselves colliding in the work of the artist. Collecting the dust and detritus from our heads and our homes, Diane Severin Nguyen creates compelling and often mystifying photographs and videos which question divides between what is considered trashy or intellectual, organic or inorganic, alienating or disarming.

Following the screening, the artist and filmmakers will stay for a conversation and Q&A from audience members.
