Description

Screen Printing with Dyes on Fabric: 2 Day Workshop

Friday, March 22 + 29, 2019 from 12 - 3:30 PM

Instructor: Nick Mahshie

Level: Intermediate

Age range 18+

Cost: $125 (materials included)

Day 1: Design & Burn Screen

Day 2: Set up fabric, measure, and print

This course explores the more painterly side of screenprinting by utilizing dye mixtures and freehand painting techniques directly on silkscreens as opposed to traditional oil or water-based ink. These designs can then be transferred onto fabric sources for unique prints resembling watercolor, acrylic painting, and other fine art processes.

Students will come up with their own designs using paper stencils and freehand painting. We will discuss the chemical properties of the dyes and mix sodium alginate, the printing paste that will allow us to print out fiber reactive dyes onto fabrics such as cotton, wool, silk, and some synthetic fibers. The resulting work produced can take the form of fabric for fine art, interior design or fashion-related projects.

This course is an intermediate level course, and is designed for students with some knowledge of silkscreen techniques and applications.
