Scratch Programming For Children (Getting Started Class)

Scratch is a programming language and an online community where children can program and share interactive media such as stories, games, and animation with people from all over the world.

As children create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically.

Who Should Take This Course?

Students aged 7 to 10yrs old who wish to begin their journey in programming and coding. No prior programming knowledge / experience is required. This is a beginners course which starts with introducing programming and logic based thinking to children via the Scratch platform.

Class Structure

  • Duration: 5 Days x 2 hrs (total 10 hrs)
  • Small Class Size: 7 students maximum
  • Hands-On task based workshop.

Course Content

Day 1: Introduction & Setup

  • What is programming?
  • Why should you learn programming?
  • What are the applications of programming in today's world?
  • Where does scratch fit into the big picture?
  • How to setup the Scratch environment on your laptop?
  • Familiarising yourself with the Scratch interface

Day 2: Learning to work with Sprites & Background

  • Selet a sprite from the Sprite Library
  • Use Editing Tools To Resize Your Sprite
  • Select An Appropriate Background from the library
  • Create Your Own background

Day 3: Make Your Characters Move!

  • Understanding The Concept Of Motion in Programming
  • Understanding The Coordinate Concept Of The Scratch Stage
  • Learning About Pixels
  • Use of Positive & Negative Values To Move Left or Right
  • Rotate The Sprite Using Turn Block
  • Move Your Sprite!
  • Understanding The Importance Of the Control Block
  • Learn About Conditional Statements (if-else)

Day 4: More About Motion Programming & Adding Sounds

  • Control The Direction Of Movement Of Your Sprite Based On A Key Press Or Mouse Click
  • Import A Sound From the Scratch Sound Library
  • Learn To Record Your Own Sounds For Your Game
  • Add The Sound To Your Animation
  • Use Numbers To Randomize The Movement Of Your Sprite
  • Use Variables To Display Changing Values Like the player's score!

Day 5: Build Your Own Game

  • Putting It All Together
  • Use Above Concepts To Create Your Very Own Game
  • How To Show Your Game To Family & Friends?
  • Q&A and Next Steps
