Description

In this introductory class, students will learn about the rich history of the African-American quilting tradition in early America and how it was influenced by African textile practices from across the Diaspora. Using an assortment of rich African fabrics, students will create a 12 inch quilt block, which conveys themes of family, love, sisterhood, self-expression, and African culture, for use as a wall hanging or framed art. Topics include fabric selection, cutting techniques, basic block construction, sashing, borders, binding and finishing.

Instructor's Biography :

Kyna Clemons is a textile quilt artist, activist, and home-school educator in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Vibrant colors, geometrical patterns, and designer fabrics from Africa set her quilts apart. A graduate of Howard University, Ms. Clemons draws inspiration for her quilts from the work and life of Harriet Powers, an enslaved African-American folk artist and quilt maker. Ms.Clemons and her husband, George Clemons, are proud parents of seven children, whom they have home-educated together for over fifteen years.

--Optional supplies include : *rotary cutter, *cutting mat, *Acrylic ruler.

--Instructor will provide fabric needed for the quilt blocks.
