Description

Visit to Graciela Ainsworth Sculpture Conservation, Edinburgh

The SSAH will visit Graciela Ainsworth Sculpture Conservation, which was the first Sculpture Conservation company to be founded in Scotland. Established in Edinburgh in 1990, Graciela Ainsworth and her team are highly regarded in undertaking the conservation and restoration of sculpture, and architectural ornament, public and private monuments both internal and external, memorials, and sculpture collections large and small, decorative stonework and historic building fabric throughout the country. Graciela Ainsworth Sculpture Conservation has built an excellent reputation with a wide-ranging client base for completing conservation projects with great sensitivity and enthusiasm, including The National Galleries of Scotland, The National Trust for Scotland, The National Museums of Scotland, local governments, trusts, architects, and private owners.

We will be joined by Phyllida Shaw, Independent Researcher, who will talk to us about Alice Meredith Williams’ practice. In 2009, a researcher from the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association came across a damaged plaster sculpture in the boiler room at Fettes College, Edinburgh. It was formally identified by Phyllida Shaw as The Lost Legion, a figure designed and modelled by Alice Meredith Williams for the Scottish National War Memorial in 1927, but rejected by the committee. He is currently resting in Graciela Ainsworth’s studio. Phyllida Shaw will take ten minutes to share the excitement of this discovery.

Please note: Graciela Ainsworth Sculpture Conservation is located at Bonnington Mill Business Centre, 72 Newhaven Road, Edinburgh, EH6 5QG.
