Event description

Description

Keith Duncan is a research scientist and the manager of one of the only 3D X-ray imaging facilities in the world dedicated exclusively to studying plant biology. Most every hospital in the modern world has X-ray systems to do non-destructive 3D imaging of patients (commonly referred to as a "CAT scan"), so that doctors can get detailed views inside a patient without having to physically slice into them. This could be called 'Virtual Dissection' where the doctor studies the electronic 3D volume to see what's wrong instead of physically cutting the patient open and digging around inside the patient's body. There are also hundreds of these instruments in the automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries to do non-destructive inspection and testing of their parts, products, and materials.

His team is doing similar research at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, the largest independent, non-profit plant research organization in the world, located right here in St. Louis. They have two kinds of X-ray instrument that allow us to virtually look inside plants to study things like disease resistance, drought tolerance, and advanced breeding technologies without physically cutting open or damaging the plants. With this non-destructive imaging technology they can see the unseen, like ears and tassels of corn as they develop inside the stalk, roots as they grow in the soil, or flowers as they develop into fruits or grains.

Remember, agricultural research is only important if you want to eat, drink (BEER!), or wear clothes.
