Description

Designing learning environments

How can collaborative and interactive learning be facilitated by the effective cognitive design of curricula and teaching strategies, and the effective physical design and use of teaching spaces?

9.00 am Acknowledgement of Country and welcome to the Colloquium

Anna Cowan SFHEA, Deputy Dean Education, ANU Joint Colleges of Science

9.15-10.15 am Keynote 1: Preparing students for an unknown future

2016 University Educator of the Year
Associate Professor Karen Burke da Silva (Flinders University)

As one of Australia’s most influential science educators, Karen will share her success in creating outstanding learning environments in science. By transforming curricula, personalising experiences for individual students, and overcoming the challenges of very large first year cohorts, she has created highly effective links between teaching and research.

10.15-10.40 Morning tea

10.40-11.40 Keynote 2: The spatial dynamics of learning environments

Richard Evans SFHEA (QUT)

Richard has extensive experience as an educator, researcher and designer. He uses his deep understanding of learning pedagogies, creative insight, and human-centred design to develop learning spaces that fuse physical and digital elements in ways that foster innovation and collaboration. Richard will share pre- and post-occupancy lessons about designing large- and small-scale learning spaces and helping teachers use them.

A Workshop with Richard Evans and leading Science educators will be held in the same venue on the same day at 2-3.30 pm, with lunch available from 1 pm. Please go to https://tinyurl.com/STLC-Learning-Spaces-Workshop for details.
