Event description

Description

Science teachers: it's time to take up the challenge! Let's talk in our middle and high school classes about the psuedo-science (or social construction) of race developed in the 1700's. How? Let's craft our lessons together during this workshop over two evenings, Thursday September 28th and Tuesday, October 3, 2017.

Equity Alliance MN is pleased to partner with Roseville Area Middle School science teacher Lisa Lindquist and Roseville Area Middle School Restorative Practices teacher Ann Hite to lead conversations and lesson design that expands student and teacher knowledge about the pseudo science of race. Our question to guide the day will be, "How was the social construction of race originally supported by science and how can we unpack this concept in our classrooms?" The session will involve 1)developing a common understanding of the social construction of race and the psuedo-science used to support this construct, and 2), teacher teamwork to modify current lessons in order to integrate these concepts into current genetics and heredity lessons taught in seventh and tenth grade science classes.

Thursday, September 28, 2017 and
Tuesday, October 3, 2017
4:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Snacks will be provided.

Intended audience:
