Ukraine is still standing, over six months since Russia launched a full-scale invasion. It’s hard to remember that initially many expected that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government wouldn’t last a week against the Russian military. On the other hand, in the ensuing weeks, many also thought that Western sanctions would be sufficient to cripple the Russian economy, undercut support for the Putin regime, and contribute to potential regime change in Russia. Neither has come to pass; while Ukraine has more successfully “fought and thought” its military campaign, Russia still wields a potent weapon with its control of energy supplies. We’ll discuss some of the unexpected outcomes of the war so far for Ukraine, Russia, and the West, and discuss future potential trajectories for this regional war that has global implications.
