Description

NUPF is excited to announce the “Lunch Networking Program” in which NU postdocs will have the opportunity to meet for lunch in small groups with professionals from their career field of interest and learn about their backgrounds and pathways to reach their current roles.

Join us for the first lunch of our program focused on CAREERS in SCIENCE OUTREACH that will have as guests:

  • Ann Harvey Tanner, PhD is the Master Builder, Science and Leaders at the Museum of Science and Industry. Her role helps to advance MSI’s mission by building capacity to effectively communicate science and develop tomorrow’s science leaders. She creates and implements strategies for developing science communicators, leaders, and programs that break down barriers between science and the public. Before joining MSI in 2014, Ann was a Program Director and Research Scientist at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute in Roanoke, Virginia. Her work as part of the research team focused on the cognitive and behavioral factors that affect human decision-making. Through her research career, she also developed a passion for building bridges between scienctists and the community through science communication and outreach. Ann completed a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University in 2002 and a PhD in Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine in 2009.

  • Alexandra "Sasha" Prokuda, PhD is the Director of Programs and Engagement at the Chicago Council on Science and Technology (C2ST). Sasha holds a Ph.D. in Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology from the University of California, Riverside. Before working at C2ST, she was a research and teaching assistant and contributing consultant for the UC Riverside Institute for Development of Education Applications (IDEA) Lab. While at UC Riverside, she was also a volunteer at the Riverside Metropolitan Museum, a teacher of an after-school science class at a local elementary school, and the founder of a scientific meet-up group. Before graduate school, Sasha interpreted science for the public all over the US while working with birds, weasels, deer, bears and Giant Redwoods.

  • Rabiah Mayas, PhD is the Associate Director of Science in Society at Northwestern University. Rabiah completed her Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology in 2007 at the University of Chicago. In 2008, Rabiah joined the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) as the Science Director for Science Chicago, a yearlong campaign that leveraged more than 140 partners and highlighted STEM through nearly 1,000 public programs. After the completion of Science Chicago, Rabiah became the Director of Science and Integrated Strategies at MSI, where she led several initiatives within the Museum’s Center for the Advancement of Education. She joined Science in Society at Northwestern University in 2017 after nine years at the Museum of Science and Industry. Rabiah is a member of numerous professional societies, nonprofit boards and advisory committees for science learning, public engagement and social justice activities. She is also a regular guest on WTTW’s Chicago Tonight for their Scientific Chicago segments covering recent scientific discoveries and news.
