The Providence Center for Media Culture the Cable Car Cinema and The Ladd Observatory at Brown University are thrilled to be presenting an outdoor screening of THE MARTIAN as part of the Science on Screen Film Series!

8:00pm : Introduction and panel discussion about the possibilities and obsticles of humans inhabiting other planets:

Panelists include Michael Lye, Professor of Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design. Since 2004 he has overseen Design for Extreme Environments, an advanced design studio in collaboration with NASA, where RISD students work with engineers and designers from Johnson Space Center to develop innovative concepts for future spacecraft and habitats.

And, Professor Peter Schultz, whose laboratory research includes atmospheric effects on ejecta emplacement, impactor survival, secondary impact processes, antipodal shock effects, high-speed spectroscopy of impact vapor/plasma, impact angle effects (shock propagation, vaporization, target damage, and flow-field evolution), projectile fate after impacts, and crater-scaling relations. He has published more than 200 papers and authored a book called “Moon Morphology.” Asteroid 6952 is named “PeteSchultz.”

Sunset 8:45pm: Film screening and star gazing! The Observatory will be open and the telescope available to peer at the early summer sky with a great view of Jupiter.

Science on Screen creatively pairs screenings of classic, cult, science fiction, and documentary films with lively presentations by notable experts from the world of science and technology. It is an initiative of the COOLIDGE CORNER THEATRE, with major support from the ALFRED P. SLOAN FOUNDATION.
