Event description

Description

Life in the city is complicated, and sometimes the only way to solve an urban problem is with a hack–a science hack, that is. Science hacks are low-cost, elegant workarounds that create useful scientific projects. Science Hack Day is a two-day event that brings together scientists, designers, developers and innovators who will invent, build and test their projects. You can participate in two ways:

* Join a team over the weekend to produce cool Science Hacks and compete for prizes. You can even submit your own pitch for a Science Hack you’d like others to help you with.

* Just stop by for our Citizen Science Explorers Program, and learn how to participate in a range of urban science projects, like swabbing bacteria on the subways to map the microbiome of NYC.

How It Works: If you’re coming for the whole Science Hack Day event, make sure to arrive by 11am on Saturday, when teams will form after listening to project pitches by both professional scientists and motivated amateurs. Don’t be shy! Science Hacks usually need a wide spectrum of skills, including programming, web design, electronics engineering, writing, illustrating, and marketing. Awards for the best Science Hacks will be selected by a panel of judges and presented at the finale of Science Hack Day NYC, on Sunday afternoon.

If you’re coming for the Citizen Science Explorers Program, show up anytime between 2pm and 6pm on Saturday, or 12pm and 4pm on Sunday, and take part in the Pop-Up Workshops or listen to the Short Talks. See topics listed at bottom of this page.

Who Participates? Anyone interested in science and with skills and time to contribute is welcome. Space is limited so registration is required to this free event. When you register, please share your interests and skills, and let us know which Science Hacks you are interested in from our list of confirmed activities. If you plan to use a laptop, please bring your own. Feel free to suggest your own Science Hack!

Under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Presented in collaboration with New York University’s Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) and the School of Engineering’s Integrated Digital Media Program (MAGNET)
