Workshop Leader - Amanda C. Freise

Social media is an often underutilized tool in science. This is unfortunate since social media can be used to promote science effectively within the general public, who rarely have access to expensive journals and scientist friends. As increased numbers of people receive their news from social media, it is important that we as scientists learn to use social media effectively to counteract false information and promote truthful and open scientific discussions. Further, social media can allow us to spread the impact of our work beyond our limited group of like-minded peers.

This event is a 2 hr workshop that requires participation. You will be expected to work in small groups and unmute yourself.

About the speaker: Amanda C. Freise is the Associate Director of Undergraduate Research in the Microbiology, Immunology, and Microbial Genetics Department at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is also the Director of Research at the Center for Positive Sexuality. Amanda is very active in improving scientific communication among students and she received both the Scientific Teaching Mentor and the Scientific Teaching Fellow from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Amanda is active on social media, and she has thousands of followers on Twitter. In our workshop, she will share strategies and tips on how to effectively use social media to promote our science and to network with our peers.
