Event Details

Science Comedy Night is back with a *special* 2019 kickoff show! We're putting together three chances for you to catch the very funny headliner SHANE MAUSS, as seen on Comedy Central. The show will also feature the wonderful ELLA AL-SHAMAHI, a stand-up comic and archeaologist coming all the way from the UK! From exploring the science of the everyday to the ethereal, Mauss and Al-Shamahi are here to entertain while bringing tidbits of information. Get ready for a night of equal parts ahas and hahas.

Doors open one hour before showtime.

Online ticket sales will stop an hour and half before showtime. Limited tickets will be sold at the door if the show is not sold out.

About Shane Mauss:

Shane Mauss leads two lives. In one, he tours full-time as a stand-up comedian. Shane has brought his unique blend of absurdist humor, thoughtful insights and storytelling to cities all over the world, as well as TV spots on Conan, Kimmel, Comedy Central, Showtime, BBC, Epix and more.

In his other life as the host of the podcast Here We Are, he’s interviewed over 200 of the world’s leading academic experts about our most fascinating traits and behaviors while finding the funny in the innermost workings of life. Each week Shane illuminates a new area of research for the show’s 50,000 loyal listeners, earning a 5-star rating on iTunes.

Shane’s unique background, comedy, and personal philosophies have also made him a popular guest on other top podcasts like Pete Holmes’ You Made It Weird, Marc Maron’s WTF, The Joe Rogan Experience, Duncan Trussell’s Family Hour, Bertcast and more.

About Ella Al-Shamahi:

Ella Al-Shamahi is a stand-up comic and archaeologist specializing in fossil hunting in caves in unstable, hostile & disputed territories. She performs science stand-up internationally, including shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She is currently undertaking her Ph.D. in rates of evolution in Neanderthals, and is filming a two-part BBC/PBS/Wellcome Trust documentary with Andy Serkis, which aims to “re-brand” Neanderthals.

She has worked in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, Iraq, and Yemen, and is currently trying to find Paleolithic caves in Yemen to test a theory that early humans may have migrated out of Africa via land bridges between East Africa and Yemen, and whether Neanderthals went that far south. The recent fighting has scaled back her Yemeni fieldwork, forcing her to prospect in other disputed places. The conflict has resulted in little-reported, wide-scale destruction to Yemeni heritage, including World Heritage sites, which she is trying to highlight. Al-Shamahi was a 2015 National Geographic Emerging Explorer.

Comedy is both a coping strategy for the darker side of her work and a way to communicate science.

FINALLY- A SCIENCE-THEMED COMEDY NIGHT!

DC Science Comedy organizes Science Comedy night-- a night where only funny science jokes, stories, and songs are allowed. Each show is unique as some are more science-oriented while others are not as heavily science-y, but you'll definitely walk away laughing. Performers include scientists, veteran storytellers, hilarious local and professional comedians, NYTimes best-selling authors, Pultizer Prize winners, and science writers who usually are all working in the sciences or have a background in math or science. Past show headliners have included comedians on Comedy Central, The Food Network, Fox, The Science Channel, Conan, and Last Comic Standing.
