Description

Moonlight snowshoe hikes are back for the 2017-18 winter season. Join our Activity Center staff as we snowshoe through majestic old growth forests with a fabulous sunset, then the moon to light our way back. You’ll find that you can see very well as the moonlight reflects off the snow. Capture a great view of Sandpoint and the surrounding area from picturesque points along the trail system. Enjoy a surprise random act of fun along the way. Topics vary but may include local plants and animals, lunar folklore, or Schweitzer’s winter history.

Upon return to the village, our host will bring you to Gourmandie where we’ll share some freshly baked bread along with a bowl of soup and a hot drink to warm your insides again. Make the evening truly complete by adding a flight of wine for only $10 (or choose other treats of course!).

FAQs

How long is the hike? We will be out on the trails up to 3 hours. Depending upon which route we choose, the hike may be up to 3 miles round trip.

Can my kids come? This hike is fairly long and not recommended for children under 13 (those little guys get tired and cold really fast!)

I've never snowshoed before and am not a "hiker", is this for me? Yes! While it may be a lengthy trek, it is a leisurely hike. We'll adjust the length of the hike to meet the needs of the group. That said, folks with poor ankles or knees and other pertinent medical conditions may want to sit this one out.....we'll come back pretty tired as it is! If you are unsure, call the Activity Center for further details at 208-255-3081.

What should I wear? Dress for various conditions or in layers. Although it may be very cold outside, you may get warmed up quickly as snowshoeing is good exercise. Snow pants are a must! Snow shoes can kick up a lot of snow resulting in very cold wet legs.

Do I need special footwear? Wear supportive boots that are at least water resistant. Many people like to rent snowboard boots to wear as they are very warm, dry and comfortable

Should I bring food or water? No need, we've got you covered! Snowshoeing takes a lot of energy and we'll have treats and bottled water to keep you going.

Do I need goggles? Eye protection is always smart, but not mandatory for our moonlight hikes. While we won't need to worry about the sun, goggles can keep your face warm as we hike in the cold night air.

Is there a discount if I have my own snowshoes? Yes! You get a $10 discount if you have your own equipment.

If you have any other questions, call the friendly folks at the Schweitzer Activity Center 208-255-3081.
