Event description

Description

A free taster workshop for construction employers to add flavour and delectability to all your schools engagement!

This interactive session will give you a taster of the full one-day Schools Engagement workshop delivered by Built Environment Skills in Schools, and will certainly prove very useful to employers who are planning to support Birmingham Construction Careers Week (8th-12th October)

Did you know:

  • According to CITB, only 10% of construction employers commit to engaging with schools
  • On an average day, schools can get up to 90 emails offering them all sorts of careers-related activity and opportunities, separate from all the other emails they get about running a school
  • 4 or more high quality encounters with employers during a student's time in education reduces their chance of becoming NEET by 86%

During the taster session, we will uncover:

  1. Storytelling techniques and making your message personal
  2. Understanding childrens' lens on careers - planning and shaping your message accordingly
  3. The questions you'll need to answer from teachers and pupils
  4. The National Careers Strategy and The Gatsby Benchmarks - what they mean for schools and for you
  5. Some of the great organisations who can shortcut your efforts to connect into schools

Everyone knows about the ongoing skills shortage in construction, but schools engagement can benefit you personally, too:

  • Working with young people can be fun and rewarding and can instil you with a sense of pride and achievement
  • You can develop transferable skills such as presentation skills; project management and planning; self-reflection and evaluating your own performance; adapting your language and pitching content for different audiences
  • It presents a new challenge to everyday work and you may gain a fresh perspective on your day to day work through the eyes of young people.

Registration and coffee from 5.30pm

PLEASE NOTE: The ice cream in the imagery may be more figurative than literal. Workshop probably won't involve tasting actual ice cream. Unless you bring your own. Sorry about that
