know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant
Governing a school is a challenging role. The Governing body relies on the shared skills, experience and knowledge of its members and it is essential that everyone knows how to communicate effectively. School Governors are the largest volunteer group in the country, bringing together members of the community from all walks of life.
Some conflict is inevitable – people have different views about what to do or how to do it, are subject to different pressures and experience different types of emotions such as anger, fear and rejection.
Some people’s personalities or working style can make them challenging to work with, particularly when they are hostile or aggressive, unresponsive or silent, negative or complaining.
Good communication skills, including assertiveness and empathy, an understanding of the difference between communication designed to control and communication designed to foster collaboration, together with an understanding as to how to manage conflict constructively, is the basis for maintaining mutual, respectful and productive relationships.
