The issue of behaviour in schools and exclusion of pupils is rarely out of the headlines. In this meeting, we’ll take a deep-dive look at both, with sessions led by two Network members with significant expertise to share...

Behaviour and exclusions: a deep dive

First, Igraine Rhodes (Education Endowment Foundation), co-author of the EEF’s new guidance report, Improving Behaviour in Schools, will give an overview of the evidence of how to improve behaviour in schools, covering:
• proactive, school-wide strategies that can be deployed at classroom level before misbehaviour occurs;
• reactive strategies for supporting pupils to improve their behaviour when they have misbehaved or have a chronic issue with their behaviour in school; and
• how schools can best implement approaches to behaviour strategically and consistently.

Then Sara Jones (Social Finance) will offer an evidence-based and co-designed response to tackling inappropriate exclusions:
• Every year, around 6,685 children are excluded from school, and while it may seem the sort of thing that only happens in secondary schools, 20% of them are under 12.
• Exclusions have been badged as another ‘education issue’, but Social Finance believe multiple factors are presenting in school settings which require a response beyond a solely educational intervention
• Social Finance is testing the hypothesis that school exclusion is a much broader issue, resulting from factors that cross family, peer and community spheres and hinge on larger aspects such as mental health and resource availability.

Hear from Sara how Social Finance has established a multi-authority partnership, bringing together the expertise of statutory agencies and partners who are at the forefront of tackling the challenge of increasing exclusions.
