Intermediate Level: (CE 3)

This CE class is offered via live webinar as well as in-person. Please select the ticket type that you prefer.

School refusal is defined as the refusal to attend or difficulty remaining in school for an entire day. Approximately 5-28% of youth are affected by school refusal. Children who refuse to attend school due to mental health concerns are at great risk for short-term and long-term impairments, including lowered academic achievement, poor social relationships, occupational difficulties, and chronic mental health concerns. Therefore, the effective treatment of school refusal is of critical importance. A comprehensive model for the treatment of school refusal is needed to address the complex interactions among individual variables, family systems, and the school environment. This workshop will delineate evidence-based approaches to the assessment and treatment of school refusal. The presenter will discuss the utilization of individual exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), group therapy for youth exhibiting school refusal behavior, parent management training, and school consultation and collaboration. Practical considerations associated with school refusal treatment will be explored.

Learning Objectives

1. List steps in school consultation for school refusal.

2. Describe common accommodations for students who refuse school.

4. Delineate four school-based intervention strategies to facilitate school reentry.

4. Identify four common barriers to school consultation for school refusal.
