Event description

School Based Therapy Essentials!

This three-hour informational session is an introductory level course targeted to related service providers that will be working in a school-based setting. Providing therapy services as part of an educational team, useful tips in developing goals, contributing to IEPs, and charting progress will be discussed. This is an excellent opportunity to prepare for the school year, whether you're a new graduate or an experienced therapist making the transition to pediatrics! Experienced therapists can gain new insight on making data-based decisions!

While the policies vary between schools, the foundations of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which guides our practice, remain consistent. This workshop is relevant to Physical Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, and Occupational Therapy intervention.

Course Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to discuss the principles of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, how related services fit into the educational model, and best practices as an educational team member.

  • Participants will be able to articulate the critical components of IEPs and utilize organizational tools to foster collaboration in a school-based setting.

  • Participants will be able to articulate the components of SMART goals and demonstrate the ability to generate educationally appropriate goals provided with case studies.

  • Participants will demonstrate the ability to select and modify data collection tools to establish baseline data, track student progress, and support goal development.
