Event description

Description

You have received this event invite because you have been identified as a Produce Supplier producing product sold by Schnuck Markets and fall into the FSMA small or very small business category. As a result of the FSMA Produce Safety Rule, Schnuck Markets, Inc. will require ALL produce supplier regardless of size to have successfully completed the FSMA Produce Safety Alliance Training and obtained a GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) audit certificate for the 2018 and subsequent growing seasons.

What is FSMA? The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law by President Barack Obama on January 4, 2011. It’s a federal law that aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus of federal regulators from responding to contamination to preventing it. FSMA has given the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) new authorities to regulate the way foods are grown, harvested and processed. The law was prompted after many reported incidents of food-borne illnesses during the first decade of the 2000's.

The FSMA Produce Safety Rule sets forth new standards for growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of produce. The standards apply to fruits and vegetables normally consumed raw, such as apples, carrots, lettuce, onions, and tomatoes. The proposed Produce Safety Rule does not apply to produce rarely consumed raw (such as winter squash) or produce grown for personal consumption. The FSMA Produce Safety Rule establishes standards for agricultural water, biological soil amendments of animal origin, worker health and hygiene, domesticated and wild animals, equipment, tools and buildings, training, sprouts, and record keeping.

To assist in helping your farm successfully complete the FSMA training and GAP audit process we have arranged for the University of Missouri Extension Service to provide training and on-farm food safety plan development assistance.

Training will be a two day event. Day 1 will be FSMA Produce Safety Alliance Training (which will result in AFDO Certification). Day 2 will be On-Farm Food Safety Plan Development and GAP Audit Preparedness. If you have already attended the FSMA Produce Safety Alliance Training and have the resulting AFDO certificate but would like assistance with On-Farm Food Safety Plan development, you may attend just Day 2 of the training. Training will be held at the University of Missouri Extension-St. Charles Office located at 260 Brown Road St. Peters, MO 63376 on January 25-26th, 2018 from 8 AM-5 PM daily. The cost for each participant will be $20 per day/$40 for two days if participant is registered before January 18th. After January 18th per person participation cost is $25 per day/$50 for two days. This training will include:
  • Education and information on the FSMA Produce Safety Rule
  • FSMA PSA Manual and AFDO Certificate
  • Assistance with development of your On-Farm Food Safety Plan
  • Information regarding the GAP audit process, who to contact and audit cost

*** If you own a laptop please feel free to bring it along to aid in writing the Food Safety Plan on day two of the training***

Such training would normally cost much more than this, but is generously supported by the MO Department of Agriculture Specialty Crop Block Grant to the University of Missouri Extension, as well as the North Central Region FSMA training center, which is based at Iowa State University.
