Schenectady Curling Club: Olympic Open House
Friday, February 21, 2014 at 6:00 PM - Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 6:00 PM
Have you watched curling in the Olympics and thought "That looks like fun!", wondered “What are they doing?” or said, “I bet I can do that, too?” Well at Schenectady Curling Club, we would like to answer your questions and show you how!
Our Olympic Open House is a great opportunity to experience curling first hand. Come with a group of friends, or sign-up by yourself. If you have a group larger than 12 people, please contact us at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
You’ll learn the basics, get introduced to some curling traditions and terminology, and then get right on the ice to learn about delivering a stone, sweeping, then throw a few stones. Hot beverages, water, and snacks will be provided. During the Friday evening and Saturday afternoon slots, our Warm Room Bar will be open offering a selection of additional libations.
Please come with a clean pair of shoes (an extra pair of clean athletic shoes would be especially helpful, if the winter weather makes the parking lot messy on the day of the event) to help keep our ice clean and free of any dirt, rocks and salt. We will also have shoe cleaning stations available.
Every participant will be automatically registered to win a free one year curling membership, and we will be holding a "draw the button" contest for additional memberships and prizes.
To help with the registration process, please download, read, and bring a signed copy of our Participant Release Waiver with you the day of the event.
Parking is free and available on the North, East and South sides of our facility. Please follow the signs to enter the parking lot via the North entrance, drive clockwise around the building to find a spot, and exit via the South driveway. There are doors to enter the warm room area on both the North and South sides of the building.
Advanced registration is encouraged and discounted to $12, for ages 13 and up (ages 6-12 are free when accompanied by an adult). Walk-ins are welcome the day of the event, as space permits. Registration at the door will cost $15 per participant (ages 13 & up).
NOTE: Any participation fees paid for the Olympic Open House, or subsequent, optional learn to curl classes and game nights at the Schenectady Curling Club, can be applied toward a new first year membership for the 2014-2015 season.
There will be sign-up sheets and information at the open house to register for additional curling lessons and on-ice game time in March and April 2014.
What to bring: Clean shoes with good rubber soles, a signed Participant Waiver for each attendee, and comfortable clothing that permits a good range of motion.
Please arrive a few minutes before your scheduled time, and plan on a full hour for your open house visit.
When & Where
Schenectady Curling Club
The Schenectady Curling Club was founded in 1907. There are over 250 members of the Schenectady Curling Club, and the vast majority curl on a regular basis throughout our season that runs late October through early April. Our members come from all walks of life and span a range of ages from six to ninety-six. Weekly league play includes women's, men's, mixed, and open formats, with four person teams organized to have fun and compete at levels from beginner to advanced. We also host a variety of in-house, regional, and international bonspiels, promoting both competitve and social aspects of the sport.
Our club is a 501(c)(3) Sports Education Foundation, dedicated to promoting the Olympic sport of curling through training and opportunities for, but not limited to, the youth of our community. Additionally, we provide training, education, and competition for all members of the community we serve.
Our facility has four sheets of ice, an inviting warm room, and excellent kitchen and bar facilities for our members. Recent improvements to our ice shed include a more efficient dehumidification system, a solar panel installation on our roof, and brand new Olympic quality curling stones from Kay's of Scotland.
