LA PREMIERE | Q&A WITH THOMAS ROTH AND JEFF WILBUSCH
Synopsis: Vienna 1960s - The young Jewish business man Victor (Jeff Wilbusch) has to witness how the prosecution of a Nazi crime against his family fails. The political and legal system is still virtually run by former Nazis with large parts of society being entangled in the past. Victor seeks the help of Simon Wiesenthal (Christian Berkel), the renowned “Nazi hunter” to bring to trial the Mauthausen commandant, Kurt Gogl. Victor loses faith in the justice system and takes matters into his own hands, leading to a shocking conclusion.
"Schäcten" explores the lives of Austrian Jews in the years following World War II and the legacies of anti-Semitism and racism that follow them. Director Thomas Roth warns, “Much of this story radiates into our present society and how quickly the cycle of hatred can re-emerge in all of us.”
