Description

The third Space Coast Golf and Turf Association In-Service Seminar of 2018 will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 from 8:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. at the Suntree Country Club in Viera (Melbourne), Florida!

The first part of this In-Service Seminar will be a discussion of the Status of Today’s Turfgrass in Florida. Second hour is a presentation on Best Management Practices (BMPs) for golf & sports turf. Third section will be an outside field experience by those attending on the application of BMPs in and around the Suntree Country Club. Fourth part of this In-Service Seminar will be a sharing of experiences by Brevard County golf course superintendents and parks & recreation managers with and for General Managers and Turfgrass Supervisors.

The speaker for today’s SCG&TA In-Service Seminar is Mr. Todd Lowe, an agronomist with the United States Golf Association (USGA) Green Section’s Southeast (United States) Region. During the first hour, Mr. Lowe will be presenting an update on the Status of Today’s Golf and Sports Turfgrass. Perhaps no other factor is more important for enjoying a round of golf or participating in a sports activity than the condition of the turfgrass. Today's golfers and sports participants have come to expect playing conditions that only a few years ago would have seemed impossible. Immaculate fairways and pristine sports fields are the result of many years of dedicated research and care. Learn about the appropriate use science to benefit golf and athletic endeavors in the areas of turfgrass management, sustainable development, and environmental protection.

Mr. Lowe will then expand the improvement of properly improving the condition of the turfgrass through the effective use Best Management Practices (BMPs). He will review Florida’s comprehensive manual of BMPs for golf courses and sports turf. BMPs are designed to preserve and protect Florida's environmental resources. Florida’s BMPs were developed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the University of Florida for golf course superintendents, parks & recreation turf managers, and other environmental groups. Mr. Lowe will review this comprehensive manual and provide instruction on the proper application of appropriate BMP cultural practices (aerification, fertilization, irrigation, top-dressing, verti-cutting and pest control) which are being utilized by all workers in Florida’s Green Industries.

During the third hour, Todd Lowe from the USGA and Jon Cockerham, the Suntree Country Club Golf Course Superintendent along with both of Suntree CC’s Assistant Superintendents will be conducting outside field experiences, for those attending, showing how BMPs can be correctly and effectively utilized around both Suntree’s Classic Golf Course and Challenge Golf Course.

The seminar will conclude with informed discussions by several Brevard County golf course superintendents and parks & recreation managers. These superintendents and managers will be sharing select real world information and experiences for all Brevard County’s golf course General Managers and Parks & Recreation Supervisors.

Those in attendance will also receive latest publications on the Cultural Practices found in UF/IFAS BMPs.

There will be 4 CEU's for pesticide license renewal available.

PGA Points will be available for PGA Professionals.

Registration will end noon on Monday July 30, 2018.
