SCENTING THE BATES MOTEL
Exposing the dark side of scent
A talk with Catherine Haley Epstein

Scenting a public space is serious business. With the hypothetical client Norman Bates, the doomed Bates Motel sets the tone for a lively discussion and working session. Artist Catherine Haley Epstein joins us at the IAO to share what she has learned scenting public spaces such as hotels, and will reveal some curious research about the ever-present creepy smells at the Bates and in our lives, that we generally sweep under the rug.

We will do a collaborative, hands-on group exercise to formulate the perfect scent for the Bates.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Catherine Haley Epstein is an artist, award-winning writer, designer and curator. She has written since 2012 on the blog Mindmarrow, Temporary Art Review and Aromatica Poetica. She just published her book Nose Dive: A Book for the Curious Seeking Creative Potential Through Their Noses, and she has a forthcoming essay entitled, God Nose: The Radical Position of the Immaterial in Olfactory Art to be published in an academic journal in 2020. Catherine continues to collaborate with artists and writers around the world on unique initiatives that explore intersections between art and other disciplines.

Her project On Forgetting—first installed in Portland, Oregon— started the journey to her researching and working with scent. Catherine has exhibited her work globally, conducts workshops on the use of scent in creative practices, and advises companies on scent-related projects.

CANCELLATION POLICY

When we host a class or workshop, we often order the materials to be used in the class well in advance, based on how many people have signed up (and padding a bit for safety).

We also use class proceeds to pay our teachers.

Although we realize that life has a funny way of getting in the way of the best laid plans, as a small non-profit we cannot afford to carry the burden of lost proceeds and materials.

With that in mind, here is our refund policy:

– Cancellation with refund or credit requests made 2 weeks or more (14 days) before the scheduled class will be honored with gusto! We’ll miss you, but will 100% refund your spot, or give you credit for another class.
– Refunds or class credits requested less than 14 days before the scheduled class: We will refund you 50% of your class fee. Why? Because we’ve already ordered the materials.
– Refunds or class credits requested less than 48 hours before the class, on the day of the class or after the class has happened will not be granted.

Note also that event tickets are non-transferable.
